As with an endothermic atmosphere, the nitrogen methanol system should be delivering a consistent composition to the furnace. Most flow rates for the system are set up to deliver approximately the same mixture of 20% carbon monoxide (CO), 40% hydrogen (H 2 ), and 40% nitrogen (N 2 ).

Metals are heated in a controlled atmosphere batch or continuous furnace to avoid oxidation. The annealing furnace may be operated with reactive gases such as Hydrogen, which requires appropriate safety technology. The Hydrogen safety system includes an automatic operating system with a Nitrogen flooding tank to detect and purge the system should any malfunctions be detected.
Once a nitrogen purge is initiated, it was to remain flowing until the operator manually initiated atmosphere flow. There was a brief overlap of the atmosphere flows to prevent a partial pressure from forming in the furnace. A typical nitrogen purge system is shown in Figure 4.
Nitempering Furnace. Nitemper ® is Ipsen's patented, internationally acclaimed process of ferritic nitrocarburizing that uses a 50% Endogas + 50% NH3 atmosphere.
